How to Calculate THC in Homemade Edibles
To calculate the THC potency in your homemade edibles, multiply the THC percentage (in decimal form) by the total amount of infused oil or butter you’re using in your recipe (measured in milligrams). If you bought your cannabis flower from a dispensary, the THC percentage will be on the packaging. For homegrown flower, you can look up the average THC percentage for your strain online.
Once you have the THC percentage, convert it to decimal form by dividing by 100. The formula will look like this: THC percentage x Milligrams = Total potency.
For example, if you’re making weed brownies with 1000 milligrams of cannabutter and your flower has 17% THC, you’d calculate: 0.17 x 1000 = 170 milligrams of total THC.
After calculating the total potency for your batch of brownies, divide this number by the number of portions in your pan. For instance, if you cut your brownies into 10 pieces, each one would contain 17 milligrams of THC. Knowing the THC content of each serving helps you gauge the effects of your homemade edibles and avoid undesirable experiences.
What’s the Right THC Dose for Beginners?
For first-time edible users, remember the phrase: start low and go slow. Beginners should begin with a low dose, typically between 2-5 milligrams, depending on your tolerance. After taking the first dose, wait at least 30 minutes to two hours before consuming more, to give your body time to process the edible.
Edibles are metabolized differently than smoked or vaporized cannabis. After ingestion, the THC is absorbed through the digestive system and then processed in the liver, where it’s converted to 11-hydroxy-THC. This compound is more efficient at crossing the blood-brain barrier, producing a stronger and longer-lasting high. Factors such as your metabolism and the contents of your stomach can also affect how edibles are absorbed, so it’s important to understand how your body reacts before increasing your dose.
If you accidentally take too high a dose and experience symptoms like nausea, paranoia, or dizziness, keep in mind that cannabis overdoses are non-lethal. You can try using CBD products, engaging in a relaxing activity, or using other strategies to counteract THC effects. Staying hydrated, resting, and remembering that the high will eventually pass are also helpful tips.
