Washington FAQs

  • To qualify for a medical card in Washington, you must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must be able to provide proof that you are a resident of Washington State.
  • You’ll need a valid Washington State driver’s license or an ID card issued by the Washington Department of Licensing.
  • You must have a diagnosis that meets Washington’s list of qualifying medical conditions for medical use.
  • You must obtain certification from a healthcare provider who is authorized to recommend medical in Washington.

  • Cancer
  • Chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis
  • Crohn’s disease with debilitating symptoms
  • Diseases causing severe nausea, vomiting, wasting, appetite loss, cramping, seizures, muscle spasms, or spasticity unresponsive to standard therapies
  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorders
  • Glaucoma (acute or chronic)
  • Hepatitis C with debilitating nausea or intractable pain
  • HIV
  • Intractable pain unrelieved by conventional treatment
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Spasticity disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury

Registration Fee: Patients must pay a $1 fee to be included in the Washington State Medical Authorization Database when they receive their medical card. This fee is required for legal protections and tax exemptions under Washington law​

Tax Exemption: Registered medical patients are exempt from the 37% excise tax on purchases. This exemption applies only to DOH-compliant medical products purchased.
